Data sources
Participation totals are sourced from the National Federation of State High School Associations’ (NFHS) High School Athletics Participation Survey, from 1970 to 2026, the organization’s annual tally of high school athletes.
The year on the charts is the spring of the school year. 2026 is the 2025–2026 season. A change labeled 2026 is that season compared with the previous reported season.
There are no survey reports from the 2020 and 2021 seasons, a gap coinciding with COVID. Growth rates for 2022 are measured from 2019, the last reported season before the gap.
